To ‘classify’ means to assign some particular characteristic to the various member/part of a group and identify them on the basis of those particular characteristics only.
Classification questions aim to test the skills of a candidate in determining the features of various things and candidate has to answer which one is odd-one from the group of 4 options.
Letter Classification : Positions of letters in Alphabets: In this type of classification, a group of jumbled letters, typically consisting a single or two or three or four letters are put together.
We need to assign them positions as per the alphabetical order. The pattern or order in which they are grouped is to be identified and need to find out which groups have the same pattern or relationship between the letters.
Illustration: Find the odd one out :
(1) BY (2) CX (3) HS (4) GV
Answer: (4)
Solution In this type of question, of all we assign a numeric value to each letter which is its alphabetic position. Then, add the numeric value assigned to both the letters. If its sum is 27, then position of both the letters is the same from the start and the and the end of the series.
B = 2 ; Y = 25 ; Sum = 2 + 25 = 27
C = 3 ; X = 24 ; Sum = 3 + 24 = 27
H = 8 ; S = 19 ; Sum = 8 + 19 = 27
G = 7 ; V = 22 ; Sum = 7 + 22 = 29 ; which is not equal to 27
Illustration: Find the odd one among the following.
(1) LY (2) GU (3) DQ (4) JW
Solution : If we assign A = 1, B = 2 ans so on......
L = 12 and Y = 25 , difference = 25 - 12 = 13
G = 7 and U = 21 , difference = 21 - 7 = 14
D = 4 and Q = 17 , difference = 17 - 4 = 13
J = 10 and W = 23 , difference = 23 - 10 = 13
Answer is (2) as difference of positions in the first half and the second half of letters are equal except option (2).
